Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to average soil. Space 15–25 feet apart or allow to naturalize in a woodland setting. Water thoroughly after planting.

Care Tips

Water deeply and regularly the first 2–3 seasons. Once established it is quite drought tolerant and very adaptable. Little pruning is needed. Sassafras spreads by root suckers to form colonies over time- remove suckers to maintain a single-trunk form, or allow to spread naturally. The extraordinary multi-lobed leaves (on the same tree, leaves may be unlobed, mitten-shaped, or three-lobed) turn vivid orange, red, and purple in fall- one of the finest native trees for fall color. Largely pest-free.
