Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained soil, spacing 18–24 inches apart. Bee balm is a native plant that adapts to a range of garden conditions but performs best with consistent moisture. Dig the planting hole to the depth of the root ball, amend with compost, and water well. Space generously to allow good air circulation around each plant, which is the best defense against powdery mildew.

Care Tips

Divide clumps every two to three years in early spring — bee balm spreads readily by underground stems and can become overcrowded, which worsens mildew issues. Water at the base to keep foliage dry. Cut back to the ground in fall. The tubular flowers are irresistible to hummingbirds throughout summer. Fertilize lightly in spring. A wonderful native plant for pollinator gardens.
