Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in average, well-drained soil, spacing 18–24 inches apart. This native aster is easy to establish and adapts to a range of garden conditions. Water regularly through the first season. Choose a site with good air circulation to reduce powdery mildew, which can be an issue in humid climates. A light mulch helps retain moisture.

Care Tips

Pinch back stems by one-third in early to mid-June for a fuller, more compact plant with more blooms come fall — unpinched plants can become tall and floppy. Divide every two to three years in spring to maintain vigor and prevent overcrowding. New York aster provides outstanding fall color and is a vital late-season food source for migrating butterflies and bees. No heavy fertilizing is needed.
