Known for its unique mitt-shaped leaves that smell like root beer when crushed. This native tree offers spectacular fall color ranging from yellow to deep orange and scarlet.

Plant sassafras in well-drained, acidic soil with full sun to partial shade. Space trees 20-30 feet apart. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Once established, sassafras is drought-tolerant. Prune in late winter to maintain shape and remove dead or crossing branches. Sassafras can spread through root suckers, so monitor and remove unwanted growth to prevent invasiveness.
