Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall, spacing 18–24 inches apart in average, well-drained soil. This native aster establishes easily and provides excellent late-season color when most other perennials have finished blooming. Water regularly through the first growing season. Choose a site with good air circulation to help minimize mildew issues in humid weather.

Care Tips

Pinch back stem tips by about one-third in early to mid-June for a fuller, more compact plant. Without pinching, plants can become tall and floppy by the time they bloom in fall. Divide every two to three years in spring to maintain vigor. An outstanding fall bloomer that provides vital nectar for migrating butterflies and bees. No heavy fertilizing is needed — lean conditions produce better flowering.
