Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist to wet, humus-rich soil. Space 3–4 feet apart- this is a large, spreading fern that needs room to develop. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch generously to retain moisture.

Care Tips

Water consistently and generously- ostrich fern naturally grows along stream banks and in moist woodland settings and thrives with reliable moisture. It spreads by underground runners to form a large colony over time; divide in spring to control spread or propagate. Remove old or tattered fronds in early spring before the new fiddleheads emerge- the emerging fiddleheads are a beautiful seasonal spectacle. No fertilization is generally needed in organically enriched soil. Largely pest-free.
