Pairs well with

Bright green fronds taper at both ends and turn golden-brown in autumn. This native fern spreads to form a dense colony, adding a fine, soft texture to the woodland floor. It is very similar in appearance but spreads less aggressively than the hayscented fern.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring in a shaded or partially shaded spot with moist, humus-rich soil. This native fern is an excellent groundcover under trees or in woodland gardens. Work compost or leaf mold into the planting area before planting. Space fronds 18–24 inches apart and water thoroughly. Mulch with shredded leaves to mimic natural woodland conditions and retain moisture.

Care Tips

Keep soil consistently moist throughout the growing season. Top-dress with compost or leaf mold each spring to maintain the rich organic soil conditions. Remove old or tattered fronds in early spring before new growth emerges. This fern spreads by underground rhizomes to slowly form a colony — perfect for filling in shaded areas under trees. No fertilizing is needed in organically rich soil.
