Plant rhizomes or potted plants in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Space 6–8 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch lightly around the base.

Water consistently throughout the growing season. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after the spring bloom period before cutting back. In colder climates, mulch over the planting area after the ground freezes to protect rhizomes through winter. Divide every 3–4 years in early fall or early spring. Largely pest-free. The brilliant red, poppy-like flowers in early spring are a vivid and welcome burst of color after winter.
