Hardy Grape Leaf Anemone

Plant in spring or fall in moist, humus-rich soil in partial shade, spacing 18–24 inches apart. This anemone produces attractive, grape-leaf-shaped foliage and flowers in late summer and fall — an important and valuable bloom time for the shade garden. Incorporate compost into the planting area. Mulch well to retain moisture. Keep consistently watered through the first growing season.

Once established, this anemone spreads readily by underground runners. Keep soil consistently moist. Remove spent flowers or allow seed heads to develop. Cut back to the ground in late fall. No fertilizing needed in organically rich soil. The late summer and fall bloom period when shade gardens are typically low on color makes this an invaluable perennial. Japanese anemones are long-lived and low-maintenance once established in appropriate conditions.
