Massive, glowing chartreuse-gold compound leaves light up shady areas with tropical-looking grandeur. Spikes of white flowers appear in late summer, followed by purple berries, but the foliage is the main event.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist, humus-rich soil in partial to full shade, spacing 3–4 feet apart. Golden Japanese spikenard (Aralia) is a dramatic, large-leaved, golden-foliaged shade perennial that forms an impressive, tropical-looking clump in shaded settings. Incorporate generous amounts of compost and water well. Mulch deeply to retain moisture. Avoid hot, dry, or sunny sites.

Care Tips

Keep soil consistently moist throughout the growing season. Cut back to the ground in late fall after frost. The large, golden leaves emerge in spring and develop to create an impressive, tropical-looking display all season. Divide when clumps become very large. Fertilize lightly in spring. The bold, golden foliage is extraordinary in shaded settings — one of the most dramatic large-leaved shade perennials available for the woodland garden.
