Japanese Painted Fern

Plant in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch generously around the base to retain moisture.

Water consistently throughout the season- adequate moisture is essential for the best frond color and healthy growth. Remove old or tattered fronds in early spring before new growth unfurls. Divide clumps every 4–5 years in spring to maintain vigor and spread the planting. A light application of balanced fertilizer in spring encourages lush growth. The silvery, burgundy-washed fronds are most vivid in part shade- avoid deep shade, which dulls the color. Largely pest-free.
