Nodding red and yellow flowers dance on tall stems in spring, providing a critical food source for returning hummingbirds. This native perennial readily self-sows and thrives in rocky, shaded areas.

Plant Eastern Red Columbine in well-drained soil with partial shade to full sun. Space plants 12-18 inches apart. Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Fertilize with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage more blooms and prevent self-seeding. Cut back foliage in late fall or early spring to promote healthy growth. Protect from strong winds and provide support if necessary.
