Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained soil in a shaded or partially shaded location. Alumroot is a native plant that works well as a groundcover or accent plant in shaded borders and woodland gardens. Amend the planting area with compost for best results. Space plants 12–18 inches apart and water well after planting. Mulch lightly to retain moisture.

Care Tips

Remove tattered or weathered foliage in early spring before new leaves emerge. Divide clumps every three to four years in early spring — alumroot tends to gradually heave out of the soil over time, and replanting the crowns at the correct depth keeps the plants healthy. The airy flower spikes attract hummingbirds in late spring. Fertilize lightly in spring with a balanced fertilizer.
