Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained soil in partial shade, spacing 12–18 inches apart. Black Sea is a coral bells variety with exceptionally dark, near-black foliage with a subtle, metallic sheen — one of the darkest coral bells available. The dramatic foliage creates extraordinary contrast with lighter-colored companion plants. Incorporate compost and water well. Mulch to retain moisture.

Care Tips

Remove tattered or old foliage in early spring before new growth emerges. Divide clumps every three to four years in spring, replanting at the correct depth. Feed lightly with a balanced fertilizer in spring. The near-black, metallic foliage is most striking alongside bright chartreuse, silver, or vivid-colored companions. The airy flower spikes in summer attract hummingbirds. An exceptional, high-impact foliage plant for the shade garden.
