Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained soil in a shaded or partially shaded location. Alumroot is a native perennial that works beautifully as a groundcover or accent plant in shaded borders and woodland gardens. Incorporate compost into the planting area before planting, space plants 12–18 inches apart, and water well. Mulch lightly to retain moisture and keep roots cool.

Care Tips

Remove weathered or tattered foliage in early spring before new leaves emerge to keep the planting looking fresh. Divide clumps every three to four years in early spring — alumroot gradually heaves out of the soil over time and replanting at the correct depth keeps plants healthy. The tall, wiry flower spikes bloom over an exceptionally long season and attract hummingbirds. Fertilize lightly in spring with a balanced fertilizer.
