Japanese Beech Fern

Plant in spring in moist, humus-rich, slightly acidic soil in partial to full shade. Japanese beech fern is a graceful, spreading fern with delicate, light green, triangular fronds and a spreading rhizomatous habit that makes it an excellent groundcover for shaded areas. Work compost or leaf mold into the planting area. Water thoroughly and mulch well to retain moisture.

Keep soil consistently moist throughout the growing season. Japanese beech fern spreads gradually to fill in shaded areas. Remove old fronds in early spring before new growth unfurls. Top-dress with compost or leaf mold each spring. No fertilizing is needed in organically rich soil. An excellent, fine-textured groundcover fern for shaded woodland gardens and under deciduous trees. Naturalistic and very easy to grow in appropriate moist conditions.
