One in a Melon carries flowers five inches across, melon orange with a matching melon-colored cone rather than the usual dark one. Echinacea 'One in a Melon' grows about 2 feet tall and 18 to 20 inches wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 8.
The petals are held out horizontally and overlap, which is what gives the flowers their size and a solid, unbroken face. Bloom runs through summer into fall, and the flowers are lightly fragrant.
Leave the last seedheads standing at the end of the season for goldfinches.
Coneflowers take drought, heat, humidity, and poor soil once established, and they want well-drained ground. Winter wet is the usual cause of failure, so avoid low spots that stay saturated. Deer generally leave them alone.
