Pairs well with

Each bright pink flower on this tall garden phlox carries a white starburst at the center. Phlox paniculata Luminary® 'Pink Lightning' grows 30 to 36 inches tall and 24 to 30 inches wide in full sun or part sun, hardy from Zone 3 through Zone 8, and fills out over its second summer.

Pink Lightning reblooms into late summer, its leaves stayed mildew-free through September in breeder trials, and it handles dry spells once established.

Tall garden phlox has been a midsummer standby in perennial borders for generations, and its classic complaint is powdery mildew graying the leaves by August. The Luminary series came out of Walters Gardens' trials, picked for dark leaves that stay clean through the season and for a sweet fragrance. Each flower is a narrow tube with nectar at the bottom, a shape made for long tongues, so swallowtails, hummingbird moths and hummingbirds come to them. The species, Phlox paniculata, is native to the eastern and central United States. Plants die back in winter, return from the roots in spring, and the stems make good cut flowers. Even mildew-resistant phlox stay cleanest with space between plants and air moving freely through the stems.

Exceptional Roses

EXCEPTIONAL ROSES!

Recently, I received a #3 pot Wollerton Old Hall Rose, a #3 Alnwick Rose, and a #2 pot Sweet Mademoiselle rose from Spotswood Greenery. I could not be more pleased and grateful. All plants are in perfect condition. Each is supported by incredibly healthy roots, several Charles Atlas-like stems, and beautiful foliage. Packaging was very secure. Clearly done with care! Shipping was quite prompt. Now, pricing! I've grown roses for 40 of my 67 years. In that time, it's easy for me to say that Spotswood has exceeded every other source without question. I found three roses in stock I had wanted! The quality is champion! The prices are very good, excellent when one buys at the free shipping level! Worth every penny! Thank you, every one, on the Spotswood Greenery Team!

Quick shipping

Bought a David Austin rose; it arrived quickly however it had some damage upon arrival. Ended up pruning and defoliating a good bit to get rid of the broken cane and pest damage, but I expect it to be a beautiful bush down the road.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch lightly. Good air circulation is important for mildew prevention.

Care Tips

Water deeply once a week in dry spells, about an inch at a time, at the base of the plant and in the morning so the leaves dry quickly.
Space plants 18 to 30 inches apart depending on mature width, and keep neighbors from crowding the stems. Moving air is the best defense against powdery mildew.
On tall garden phlox, thin each plant to its strongest 4 to 6 stems in late spring, when shoots are 6 to 8 inches tall. This opens the plant to air and gives larger flower heads.
Mulch lightly to hold moisture, keeping it a few inches back from the crown.
Feed once in spring with compost or a balanced slow-release fertilizer. Extra nitrogen makes soft growth that mildews more easily.
Remove spent flower heads to bring on side shoots and a second round of bloom, and to stop self-seeding. Seedlings do not come true to the parent.
Mildew that shows up in late summer is mostly cosmetic. Cut off the worst leaves and give the plant more room next year.
Spider mites can appear in hot, dry weather; regular watering keeps them down.
Cut stems to the ground after frost or in early spring.
Divide every 3 to 4 years in spring, when the center of the plant thins out.
Deer and rabbits browse phlox; protect new growth where they are a problem.
