Black Hat® Rhododendron

Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic soil (pH 4.5–6.0) with generous organic matter. Space 4–6 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep, keeping mulch away from the crown.

Water deeply and consistently throughout the growing season. Prune lightly immediately after flowering — rhododendrons bloom on old wood. Fertilize in spring with an acid rhododendron fertilizer. Black Hat® produces flowers in deep, rich, near-black purple tones — one of the most dramatically dark rhododendrons available. The near-black flower buds and vivid, jewel-dark flowers are exceptionally striking against the glossy, dark green, evergreen foliage. Monitor for lace bugs. Largely otherwise pest-free.
