Pairs well with

New growth comes in purple on this false hydrangea vine, setting off lightly fragrant, creamy white flower clusters in summer. Schizophragma hydrangeoides Flirty Girl® 'Minsnow3' climbs 40 to 50 feet with a 4 to 6 foot spread in part shade to shade, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 9.

The purple fades to green as the leaves mature, so the color is strongest in spring and on each new flush of growth. Bees visit the small fertile flowers at the center of each cluster.

Climbing hydrangea and its close relative, false hydrangea vine (Schizophragma), climb by aerial rootlets that grip brick, stone, wood and tree bark without any tying. They get heavy with age and need a solid support, such as a masonry wall, a sturdy fence or arbor, or a large tree trunk. The rootlets can mark paint and work into siding, so a painted or sided wall makes a poor host.

Both are slow to start. Most of the first few years goes into roots and anchoring, and flowering can take several years to begin, after which growth picks up quickly. They bloom on old wood, so any pruning to keep them in bounds comes right after flowering. With nothing to climb, both will also grow as a groundcover or trail over a wall.

It covers a masonry wall, a sturdy fence or a large tree trunk, and it also trails well over a wall.

Exceptional Roses

EXCEPTIONAL ROSES!

Recently, I received a #3 pot Wollerton Old Hall Rose, a #3 Alnwick Rose, and a #2 pot Sweet Mademoiselle rose from Spotswood Greenery. I could not be more pleased and grateful. All plants are in perfect condition. Each is supported by incredibly healthy roots, several Charles Atlas-like stems, and beautiful foliage. Packaging was very secure. Clearly done with care! Shipping was quite prompt. Now, pricing! I've grown roses for 40 of my 67 years. In that time, it's easy for me to say that Spotswood has exceeded every other source without question. I found three roses in stock I had wanted! The quality is champion! The prices are very good, excellent when one buys at the free shipping level! Worth every penny! Thank you, every one, on the Spotswood Greenery Team!

Quick shipping

Bought a David Austin rose; it arrived quickly however it had some damage upon arrival. Ended up pruning and defoliating a good bit to get rid of the broken cane and pest damage, but I expect it to be a beautiful bush down the road.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Provide a sturdy support structure. Space 6–10 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep.

Care Tips

Water deeply and consistently. False hydrangea vine is slow to establish- do not be discouraged by minimal growth the first 2–3 seasons. Once established it grows vigorously. Blooms on old wood- prune lightly only after flowering. Fertilize lightly in spring. Flirty Girl® has a more compact, manageable habit than standard climbing hydrangea with abundant flower clusters and appealing peeling bark in winter. A refined, well-behaved climbing hydrangea for shaded walls and structures.
