Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Space 40–60 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 3–4 inches deep, keeping mulch well away from the trunk.

Care Tips

Water deeply and regularly the first 2–3 seasons. Once established it tolerates moderate drought. Little pruning is needed on young trees. Sugar maple performs best in cooler climates and struggles in hot, humid, or compacted urban conditions. Fertilize lightly in spring during establishment. The brilliant scarlet, orange, and gold fall foliage is among the finest of any native tree- one of the most iconic autumn spectacles in North America. Largely pest-free. Also the source of maple syrup on mature, large trunks.
