Bottlebrush Buckeye

Plant in moist, well-drained to average soil. Space 8–12 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch generously. This large native shrub spreads by suckering- allow space for it to spread naturally.

Water consistently, especially the first 2–3 seasons. Once established it is quite adaptable and tolerates moderate drought and shade. The spreading, suckering habit creates a dramatic, colony-like effect over time. Remove any suckers that stray too far. Little pruning is needed otherwise. Fertilize lightly in spring if desired. The tall, white, bottlebrush-like flower spikes in midsummer are extraordinarily beautiful, and the enormous, bold leaves and vivid yellow fall color are outstanding. Largely pest-free.
