Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained to wet, acidic soil. Space 3–4 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch lightly.

Care Tips

Water consistently after planting; once established it is highly adaptable to wet, dry, and poor soils- one of the most tolerant native shrubs. Little pruning is needed; remove the oldest canes at the base in early spring to encourage vigorous new growth. Fertilize lightly in spring with an acid fertilizer. A compact, well-behaved selection with vivid red fall foliage and persistent glossy black berries attractive to birds. Largely pest- and disease-free. An excellent, tough, low-maintenance native shrub.
