Pairs well with

True red semi-double flowers glowing against dark green foliage, on the most compact Encore at 1 to 3 feet tall and 2 to 4 feet wide. Rhododendron 'Robleza', sold as Encore Autumn Bonfire®, grows in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 6 through Zone 10.

The doubling gives the flowers more substance than the singles, and the red is a genuine red rather than a red-leaning pink. At this size it fits a container, a narrow bed, or the front edge of a border.

Encore azaleas can flower up to three times a year. A traditional azalea blooms for a couple of weeks in spring and then stops, while Encores set buds on new growth through the season and bloom again in summer and once more in fall. Spring and fall give the strongest shows, with the summer flush lighter and more scattered. They also take more sun than most azaleas.

Azaleas want acidic soil, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.0, with good drainage and steady moisture. Mulch the shallow roots.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic soil (pH 4.5–6.0) with generous organic matter. Space 3–4 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep, keeping mulch away from the crown.

Care Tips

Water deeply and consistently throughout the growing season. Encore azaleas bloom in spring on old wood and again in late summer and fall on new growth. Prune lightly only immediately after the spring bloom to preserve fall flower buds. Fertilize in spring with an acid azalea fertilizer. Monitor for lace bugs in summer. The vivid, fiery-red flowers are bold and produced reliably in two distinct seasons, delivering excellent two-season color value in the landscape.
