Pairs well with

Semi-double dark purple flowers, deeper and cooler than most azaleas offer, on a naturally rounded plant. Rhododendron 'Roblezd', sold as Encore Autumn Majesty®, grows 2 to 3 feet tall and wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 6 through Zone 10.

The compact even size suits a container, a foundation planting, or a matched pair flanking a door, and it holds its shape without pruning.

Encore azaleas can flower up to three times a year. A traditional azalea blooms for a couple of weeks in spring and then stops, while Encores set buds on new growth through the season and bloom again in summer and once more in fall. Spring and fall give the strongest shows, with the summer flush lighter and more scattered. They also take more sun than most azaleas.

Azaleas want acidic soil, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.0, with good drainage and steady moisture. Alkaline ground turns the leaves yellow. Mulch the shallow roots.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic soil (pH 4.5–6.0) with generous organic matter. Space 3–4 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep, keeping mulch away from the crown.

Care Tips

Water deeply and consistently throughout the growing season. Encore-type reblooming azaleas flower in spring on old wood and again in late summer and fall on new growth. Prune lightly only immediately after the spring bloom. Fertilize in spring with an acid azalea fertilizer. Monitor for lace bugs in summer. Largely otherwise pest-free when sited with good drainage and acidic soil. The rich purple flowers provide excellent color in both the spring and fall bloom periods.
