Funnel-shaped flowers open yellow and shift through orange to pink as they age, so a plant in bloom carries all three colors at once. Rhododendron 'Garden Rainbow' grows 4 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 8.
The color change happens on individual flowers rather than between them, which means the effect builds through the bloom period rather than appearing all at once.
This is a deciduous azalea, so the leaves drop in fall after coloring.
Acidic soil is necessary, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.0, with good drainage and steady moisture. Alkaline ground turns the foliage yellow. Mulch the shallow roots.
