Massive trusses of ruffled vivid orange flowers open in mid-spring, and they carry a fragrance most orange azaleas lack. Rhododendron 'Gibraltar' grows 4 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 8.
This is a Knap Hill hybrid, which is where both the flower size and the scent come from. It opens in mid-spring, ahead of the later orange azaleas, so a garden with both gets several weeks of orange rather than one burst.
The flowers open before the leaves fully expand, so the color sits on nearly bare stems. Fall foliage turns orange to bronze.
This is a deciduous azalea, so the leaves drop in fall. Acidic soil is necessary, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.0, with good drainage and steady moisture. Mulch the shallow roots.
