Pairs well with

Pink flowers striped with white down each petal, carrying a spicy-sweet scent noticeable well before the plant is in view. Rhododendron viscosum 'Ribbon Candy' grows 5 to 7 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 8.

The striping is what separates this from the other swamp azaleas, giving each flower a two-tone candy pattern. Bloom comes in late spring, weeks after the evergreen azaleas have finished.

Hummingbirds and butterflies come to the flowers, and bees feed on them through the bloom.

Swamp azalea grows wild in bogs and along stream edges, so it handles wet ground and standing water. This is a deciduous azalea, dropping its leaves in fall after they turn bronze to purple. Acidic soil is necessary, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.0.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist to wet, acidic soil (pH 4.5–6.0) enriched with organic matter. Space 5–6 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch generously to retain moisture.

Care Tips

Water deeply and consistently- swamp azalea naturally grows in moist to wet conditions and thrives with reliable moisture. Prune lightly immediately after flowering to preserve the following year's buds. Fertilize in spring with an acid-formulated azalea fertilizer. The fragrant flowers are a distinctive quality of this native azalea and very attractive to pollinators and hummingbirds. Largely pest-resistant and easy to grow in the right moist, acidic conditions.
