Pairs well with

Beach plum grows in pure sand on an exposed dune, which is about as hard a site as a fruiting shrub can be asked to take. Prunus maritima is a native shrub reaching 6 to 7 feet tall and wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 3 through Zone 8.

Clouds of white flowers cover the branches in spring before the leaves expand, followed by purple plums about an inch across in late summer. The fruit is tart eaten fresh and excellent cooked into jam and jelly, which is what it has been used for on the New England coast for generations.

Beach plum feeds coral hairstreak, tiger swallowtail, and spring azure caterpillars, and songbirds take the fruit.

High salt tolerance is what sets it apart. It handles salt spray, sandy soil, wind, and drought once established, and it wants sharp drainage rather than rich ground. Fruit set improves with a second plant nearby. It suckers into a thicket, which suits a bank or a hedgerow. Deer leave it alone.

Exceptional Roses

EXCEPTIONAL ROSES!

Recently, I received a #3 pot Wollerton Old Hall Rose, a #3 Alnwick Rose, and a #2 pot Sweet Mademoiselle rose from Spotswood Greenery. I could not be more pleased and grateful. All plants are in perfect condition. Each is supported by incredibly healthy roots, several Charles Atlas-like stems, and beautiful foliage. Packaging was very secure. Clearly done with care! Shipping was quite prompt. Now, pricing! I've grown roses for 40 of my 67 years. In that time, it's easy for me to say that Spotswood has exceeded every other source without question. I found three roses in stock I had wanted! The quality is champion! The prices are very good, excellent when one buys at the free shipping level! Worth every penny! Thank you, every one, on the Spotswood Greenery Team!

Quick shipping

Bought a David Austin rose; it arrived quickly however it had some damage upon arrival. Ended up pruning and defoliating a good bit to get rid of the broken cane and pest damage, but I expect it to be a beautiful bush down the road.

Comfortable ordering process

The information and accuracy of the description of the ordered plants was great. The ability to search for specific plants was nice. Could search for terms not pre-defined and still came up with relevant specimens.

The online ordering process went smoothly.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring in sandy, well-drained soil. Beach plum is native to coastal areas and thrives in conditions that challenge most plants — poor, sandy soil, salt spray, and drought. It does not perform well in heavy clay or consistently wet soils, so good drainage is critical. Dig the planting hole to the depth of the root ball, backfill without amendment, and water well. Space plants 6–8 feet apart.

Care Tips

Prune right after flowering in spring to shape and remove any dead wood. For the best fruit production, plant at least two shrubs for cross-pollination. The small blue-purple plums that ripen in late summer are edible and can be used for jams and preserves. Very drought tolerant once established. No regular fertilizing is needed in lean, sandy soils.
