Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Space 15–25 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 3–4 inches deep, keeping mulch well away from the trunk.

Care Tips

Water deeply and regularly the first 2–3 seasons. Once established it tolerates moderate drought but performs best with consistent moisture. Little pruning is needed- remove dead or crossing branches in late spring after flowering. Fertilize lightly in spring with an acid fertilizer. Avoid wounding the trunk with lawn equipment- this is the primary entry point for dogwood borer. Monitor for powdery mildew. The profuse, large white bracts in spring, red berries in fall, and brilliant red fall foliage make this an exceptional four-season native tree.
