Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Space 5–7 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep.

Care Tips

Water consistently after planting; once established it tolerates moderate drought but looks best with steady moisture. For the most vivid red stem color, cut one-third of the oldest stems to the ground in late winter each year- the brightest color appears on young stems. Fertilize lightly in spring with an acid fertilizer. The vivid, fire-red stems glow in winter sun against snow and are outstanding for seasonal interest. Largely pest-free. An excellent native shrub for rain gardens, pond edges, and moist borders.
