Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring in well-drained to dry soil, spacing 3–4 feet apart. Adam's needle is a structural, architectural plant that thrives in hot, dry conditions and tolerates poor, sandy, and rocky soils exceptionally well. Dig the planting hole to the depth of the root ball. No soil amendment is necessary — lean soil conditions actually produce the most vigorous plants. Water moderately after planting.

Care Tips

This plant is virtually maintenance free once established. Remove spent flower spikes after blooming. The bold, sword-like leaves provide dramatic year-round structure. Adam's needle is highly drought tolerant — overwatering and poor drainage are the primary causes of decline. No regular fertilizing is needed. The tall flower spikes, reaching up to 5 feet, are a striking summer spectacle that attracts hummingbirds.
