Pairs well with

Bright red flowers open in spring on a plant that spreads 6 to 8 feet wide while holding at 4 to 5 feet tall. Rhododendron Holden's™ Red grows in part sun to part shade, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 8.

The dark green leaves set off the flower color and hold their look through winter.

The Holden's rhododendrons were selected for two things that matter more than flower color: bud hardiness that holds through Zone 5 winters, and foliage that resists the leaf spot and root troubles that shorten the life of many rhododendrons. They are sold under the WorryFree® label for that reason.

The large-leaf rhododendrons hold their foliage year-round rather than thinning like the small-leaved types. Below about 25 degrees the leaves droop and curl up, curling tighter the colder it gets, and they open again within hours once temperatures rise. It looks alarming the first winter and it is entirely normal, a water-conserving response rather than a sign of trouble.

The broad spreading habit suits a hedge or a mass planting. Acidic soil is necessary, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.0, with good drainage and steady moisture. Mulch the shallow roots.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic soil (pH 4.5-6.0) with generous organic matter. Space 4-6 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2-3 inches deep, keeping mulch away from the crown.

Care Tips

Water deeply and consistently throughout the growing season. Prune lightly immediately after flowering. Fertilize in spring with an acid rhododendron fertilizer. Developed at the Holden Arboretum for exceptional cold hardiness in northern climates. Red produces vivid, rich red flowers on a well-formed, cold-hardy shrub- one of the most deeply colored and cold-hardy red rhododendrons available. Monitor for lace bugs. Largely otherwise pest-free.
