Munchkin Oakleaf Hydrangea

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained soil in partial shade, spacing 3–4 feet apart. Munchkin is a very compact oakleaf hydrangea — significantly smaller than the species — with the same outstanding qualities: white flowers that age to rose-pink, bold oakleaf-shaped foliage, and beautiful cinnamon peeling bark. It is ideal for smaller gardens where full-sized oakleaf hydrangea would be too large.

Prune lightly right after flowering in summer if shaping is needed — oakleaf hydrangea blooms on old wood. Remove dead wood in early spring. Keep soil consistently moist. The peeling, cinnamon bark provides winter interest. Fertilize lightly in spring. Munchkin's compact size makes it one of the most garden-friendly oakleaf hydrangeas, fitting comfortably in foundation plantings and mixed borders where the species would quickly outgrow the space.
