Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist to wet, acidic soil (pH 3.5–6.5). Space 6–8 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep. A male pollinator such as Jim Dandy or Apollo must be planted nearby for berry production.

Care Tips

Water consistently and generously- winterberry thrives in moist to wet conditions and tolerates seasonally wet areas very well. Little pruning is required. Remove any dead or crossing branches in early spring. Fertilize lightly in spring with an acid fertilizer. The brilliant, persistent red berries that cover the bare stems in fall and winter are outstanding for wildlife and winter garden interest. Birds flock to the berries once temperatures drop.
