Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained to wet, acidic soil (pH 3.5–6.5). Space 6–8 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch generously. A male pollinator variety such as Jim Dandy or Apollo must be planted nearby for berry production.

Care Tips

Water consistently and generously- winterberry thrives in moist to wet conditions and tolerates seasonal flooding. Little pruning is needed; remove dead or crossing branches in early spring. Fertilize lightly in spring with an acid fertilizer. The brilliantly colored berries covering the bare stems in fall and winter are outstanding for wildlife and winter garden interest. Birds flock to the berries once temperatures drop. Largely pest-free. One of the most spectacular native shrubs for fall and winter ornamental value.
