Avalanche Andromeda

Plant in spring or fall in acidic, moist, well-drained soil in partial shade. Andromeda (Pieris) requires acidic conditions similar to rhododendrons. Amend soil with peat or acidic compost if needed. Set the root ball at or just above grade, mulch 3–4 inches deep, and water well. Keep consistently moist through the first growing season. Protect from harsh afternoon sun and drying winds.

Minimal pruning is needed beyond removing dead wood in early spring. Andromeda provides multi-season interest — the new foliage emerges in brilliant red in spring before maturing to glossy green, and the white flower clusters hang like strings of pearls in early spring. Feed with an acid fertilizer in early spring. Keep soil consistently moist. Replenish mulch annually. A beautiful, four-season acid-loving shrub.
