Compact Japanese Andromeda

Plant in spring or fall in acidic, moist, well-drained soil in partial shade. Japanese andromeda (Pieris japonica) is an elegant, evergreen shrub that requires acidic conditions similar to azaleas. Amend soil with peat or acidic compost if needed. Set the root ball at or just above grade, mulch 3–4 inches deep, and water well. Provide protection from afternoon sun and drying winds.

Minimal pruning is needed — remove only dead wood and any spent flower clusters in early spring. The colorful new growth and pendulous white flower chains are the primary ornamental features. Feed with an acid fertilizer in early spring. Keep soil consistently moist. Replenish mulch annually. All parts of andromeda are toxic if ingested. A beautiful, four-season, acid-loving shrub for shaded woodland-style gardens.
