Pairs well with

Bright pink flowers open on a vigorous plant bred in Finland for extreme cold, hardy through Zone 4. Rhododendron 'Haaga' grows 3 to 4 feet tall and wide in part shade, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 8.

The Finnish breeding program that produced it was aimed at rhododendrons that survive winters most of the genus cannot.

The large-leaf rhododendrons hold their foliage year-round rather than thinning like the small-leaved types. Below about 25 degrees the leaves droop and curl up, curling tighter the colder it gets, and they open again within hours once temperatures rise. It looks alarming the first winter and it is entirely normal, a water-conserving response rather than a sign of trouble.

The compact size suits a foundation bed or a smaller garden. Acidic soil is necessary, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.0, with good drainage and steady moisture. Mulch the shallow roots.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring in acidic, moist, well-drained soil with afternoon shade and shelter from harsh winter winds. Haaga is a Finnish-bred rhododendron with exceptional cold hardiness, producing deep pink flowers in late spring. It is one of the most reliably cold-hardy rhododendrons available for extreme northern climates. Amend soil with peat or acidic compost. Set root ball at or just above grade and mulch deeply.

Care Tips

Remove spent flower clusters after bloom to encourage next year's bud development. Feed with an acid fertilizer in early spring. Keep soil consistently moist. Replenish mulch annually to protect the shallow roots. Haaga's exceptional cold hardiness — bred specifically for Scandinavian conditions — makes it one of the most reliable rhododendrons for the coldest gardening zones. A dependable, rewarding rhododendron for challenging cold-climate gardens.
