Pairs well with

Salmon-pink buds open to soft creamy yellow flowers, a pastel shift that plays out across the cluster as the flowers age. Rhododendron yakushimanum Golden Torch grows 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide in part shade, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 9.

Zone 5 through Zone 9 is a wider range than most of the group carries, taking both harder winters and hotter summers.

The yakushimanum hybrids come from a species native to a single Japanese island, and they inherit its best traits: dense compact habit, thick leaves with a felted tan coating underneath, and heavy bud set on young plants. They hold their foliage better through winter than most large-leaf rhododendrons, though the leaves still roll in hard cold, which reverses as soon as it warms.

The habit is compact and semi-dwarf, holding a tidy mound. Acidic soil is necessary, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.0, with good drainage and steady moisture. Mulch the shallow roots.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring in acidic, moist, well-drained soil with afternoon shade protection. Golden Torch is a compact rhododendron with delicate, soft yellow flowers and attractive, smooth foliage. Amend soil with peat or acidic compost if needed. Set root ball at or just above grade, mulch 3–4 inches deep, and water well. Choose a sheltered site protected from harsh afternoon sun and drying winter winds.

Care Tips

Remove spent flower clusters after bloom. Feed with an acid fertilizer in early spring. Keep soil consistently moist. Replenish mulch annually. Golden Torch's soft yellow flowers are gentle and refined — less intense than some yellow rhododendrons but elegant and easy to combine with other spring-flowering shrubs. A reliable, compact rhododendron for shaded, acidic garden settings where a softer yellow tone is desired.
