Silky, silver-grey catkins appear on bare stems in late winter, signaling the arrival of spring. This fast-growing shrub can be cut back hard to encourage long stems, which are perfect for indoor floral arrangements.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist to wet soil, spacing 8–10 feet apart. Pussy willow is a native shrub or small tree that thrives in wet, poorly drained conditions near ponds, streams, and rain gardens. No special soil preparation is needed. Dig the planting hole to the depth of the root ball, water well, and mulch. It establishes quickly in moist conditions.

Care Tips

Prune in late spring after the catkins finish to control size and shape. Pussy willow can be cut back hard every few years to rejuvenate and produce the best catkin display — younger growth produces the most abundant catkins. The silvery, fuzzy catkins in very early spring are among the most beloved signs of the season. Cut branches brought indoors in winter will produce catkins in a vase. Very cold hardy and low maintenance.
