York Elderberry

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained to wet soil, spacing 6–8 feet apart. York is one of the most productive and widely grown elderberry varieties, bearing large clusters of dark berries in late summer. Elderberry adapts to a range of soils including wet conditions and is extremely cold hardy. Plant two varieties for the best cross-pollination and berry production. Dig a generous planting hole and water well.

Prune in early spring, removing the oldest canes and any dead wood to rejuvenate the plant. Elderberry is very vigorous and benefits from annual pruning to keep it productive and well-shaped. The large clusters of dark berries are important for wildlife and excellent for elderberry wine, juice, and syrup. All parts except ripe berries are toxic — do not eat raw berries or other plant parts. Fertilize in spring.
