Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained, acidic soil in partial to full shade, spacing 3–4 feet apart. Female skimmia requires a male skimmia planted nearby for pollination — without a male, no berries will form. It produces fragrant white flower clusters in spring and bright red berries that persist through winter. Incorporate compost into the planting area and water well. Mulch generously.

Care Tips

Minimal pruning is needed beyond removing any dead wood. Feed with an acid fertilizer in early spring. Keep soil consistently moist. Replenish mulch annually. The bright red berries persisting through winter are the primary ornamental feature of female skimmia. Skimmia is one of the best shade-tolerant shrubs for fragrant flowers and persistent winter berries. All parts are toxic if ingested. An outstanding, four-season shrub for shaded woodland-style gardens.
