Pairs well with

Sweet Birch is a charming tree with glossy, dark green leaves that turn a stunning yellow in the fall. Its bark is smooth and reddish-brown, often peeling in thin strips. Crush a twig, and you'll catch a delightful wintergreen scent. This tree is a favorite for its aromatic qualities and is often used in making birch beer.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Space 20–30 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 3–4 inches deep, keeping mulch away from the trunk.

Care Tips

Water deeply and regularly the first 2–3 seasons. Once established it tolerates moderate drought. Sweet birch has dark, non-exfoliating, cherrylike bark rather than white bark- quite different in appearance from white-barked birches. The bark and crushed twigs have a distinctive, sweet wintergreen fragrance. Monitor for bronze birch borer- keeping trees healthy and well-watered is the best prevention. The vivid golden-yellow fall foliage is outstanding. An excellent native tree for woodland and naturalistic landscapes.
