Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist to wet soil, spacing 20–30 feet apart. Bald cypress is a magnificent native tree that thrives in wet, boggy conditions but adapts to average, well-drained soils much better than most people realize. Dig a generous planting hole, amend with compost, and water deeply. Young trees establish quickly when consistently watered. Mulch generously.

Care Tips

Minimal pruning is needed beyond removing dead wood. Young trees benefit from consistent watering. Once established, bald cypress is very adaptable and long-lived. The ferny, soft foliage turns gorgeous, russet-orange in fall — one of the most beautiful fall colors of any tree. The unique, 'knees' (pneumatophores) that develop at the base in wet conditions are fascinating ornamental features. A magnificent native tree for large spaces.
