Mariesii Viburnum

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained soil, spacing 8–10 feet apart. Mariesii is a doublefile viburnum with a strongly horizontal branching habit and masses of lacy, flat-topped white flower clusters arranged in rows along the branches in late spring — a spectacular, architectural flowering shrub. Dig a generous planting hole, amend with compost, and water well. Mulch to retain moisture.

Minimal pruning is needed — the horizontal branching habit is the primary ornamental feature and should not be disturbed with heavy pruning. Remove dead wood in early spring. Keep soil consistently moist. The fall berries ripen through red to black and are enjoyed by birds. Brilliant red fall foliage adds a third season of interest. Fertilize in spring. One of the most architecturally dramatic of all flowering shrubs.
