Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained to average soil, spacing 8–10 feet apart. Leatherleaf viburnum is a large, semi-evergreen to evergreen shrub with bold, textured foliage and creamy white flowers in early spring. It adapts to a range of soils and conditions and is exceptionally cold-hardy for an evergreen viburnum. Dig a generous planting hole, amend with compost, and water well.

Care Tips

Minimal pruning is needed beyond removing dead wood in spring and shaping after flowering. The large, leathery, heavily textured leaves provide bold year-round structure — a valuable quality in winter landscapes. Red berries ripen to black in fall and are eaten by birds.
