Pairs well with

Bailey Compact is the American cranberrybush scaled down to fit. Viburnum trilobum 'Bailey Compact' holds at 5 to 6 feet tall and wide, about half the size of the species, which puts it within reach of a foundation planting or a mixed border where a full-size viburnum would crowd everything around it. Full sun to part shade, hardy from Zone 2 through Zone 7, and it fills out over three or four seasons.

Flat white lacecap flowers open in late spring, the outer ring of showy sterile florets surrounding smaller fertile ones in the center. Bright red fruit follows in late summer and holds on the bare branches deep into winter, which is the main reason to grow it.

Fall color is the other reason. The maple-shaped leaves turn a strong red to burgundy, more reliably on this selection than on the species, and the display comes late in the season.

The fruit is edible but very tart, and it is mostly used cooked into jelly or sauce rather than eaten off the shrub. Birds usually get to it first anyway. Cedar waxwings and robins take the fruit through late winter after repeated freezing softens the berries. It handles wet soil and cold better than most viburnums. Deer will browse it.

Exceptional Roses

EXCEPTIONAL ROSES!

Recently, I received a #3 pot Wollerton Old Hall Rose, a #3 Alnwick Rose, and a #2 pot Sweet Mademoiselle rose from Spotswood Greenery. I could not be more pleased and grateful. All plants are in perfect condition. Each is supported by incredibly healthy roots, several Charles Atlas-like stems, and beautiful foliage. Packaging was very secure. Clearly done with care! Shipping was quite prompt. Now, pricing! I've grown roses for 40 of my 67 years. In that time, it's easy for me to say that Spotswood has exceeded every other source without question. I found three roses in stock I had wanted! The quality is champion! The prices are very good, excellent when one buys at the free shipping level! Worth every penny! Thank you, every one, on the Spotswood Greenery Team!

Quick shipping

Bought a David Austin rose; it arrived quickly however it had some damage upon arrival. Ended up pruning and defoliating a good bit to get rid of the broken cane and pest damage, but I expect it to be a beautiful bush down the road.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained to wet soil, spacing 4–5 feet apart. Bailey Compact is a dwarf American cranberrybush viburnum — more compact than the standard species but with the same white spring flowers, red fall berries, and outstanding fall foliage. It adapts to wet soils and a range of conditions. Dig the planting hole to the depth of the root ball and water well.

Care Tips

Minimal pruning is needed. Remove dead wood in early spring. Keep soil consistently moist. The white spring flowers, brilliant red fall berries, and outstanding scarlet fall foliage make this a four-season native shrub of exceptional value. The berries provide important winter food for birds. No regular fertilizing is needed. An excellent compact native viburnum for smaller gardens and moist sites.
