Plant in average, well-drained soil. Space 3–4 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch lightly.

Water regularly after planting; once established it tolerates moderate drought. Prune by removing one-third of the oldest canes at the base immediately after the main spring flowering flush. Fertilize lightly in early spring. Largely pest-free. A compact, mound-forming weigela with exceptionally dark, wine-red foliage that holds its rich color all season. The deep pink tubular flowers in spring are attractive to hummingbirds. An outstanding, low-maintenance shrub for bold foliage color in smaller spaces.
