Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained soil. Space 3–4 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it is quite drought tolerant and adaptable to lean conditions. Prune out one-third of the oldest canes at the base each spring. Fertilize lightly in spring. The warm copper and orange tones in the new foliage are the standout ornamental feature, especially vivid in spring and fall. The tubular flowers attract hummingbirds and the berries are attractive to birds. Largely pest-free and deer resistant. A refined native shrub for mixed borders.
